Research Interests

The Laboratory for Electromagnetic Multiphysics (LEM) performs research on fusion techniques applied to fundamental and applied problems in electromagnetic multiphysics. Our interests are specifically in analysis and design for electromagnetic multiphysics problems spanning the nano- to the macro-scales. We build numerical simulation tools and conduct experimental studies in electromechanical dynamics, continuum electromechanics, electric discharge and insulation in dielectric media, electromagnetic nano and micro fluidics, and power and energy devices. Integral to this research is development of new simulation techniques and designs for NEMS (Nanoelectromechanical systems), MEMS (Microelectromechanical systems), sensors, actuators, electric machines, bio-medical instruments, power apparatus, high-field systems, and energy devices.

Major Research Achievements

o Analysis of electromagnetic force density and its application
o Development of multiphysics analysis methods for electromagnetic systems coupled with thermal, fluidic, structural, and dynamic problems
o Studies on Electrohydrodymics (EHD), Ferrohydrodynamics (FHD), and Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD)
o Development of numerical methods for electric discharge
o Analysis and desigen of power apparatus such as power cables, power transformers, vacuum interrupters, electric precipitators, etc.
