Abstract

This chapter introduces and compares the various random access (RA) technologies designed for 3G and beyond 3G mobile communication systems including Mobile WiMax, IEEE 802.20, cdma2000, WCDMA, and 3G LTE. In terms of fundamental design issues of RA, such as multiplexing, RA procedures, backoff algorithm, power control and priority schemes, the competing systems are compared. Furthermore, the performances of ranging for Mobile WiMax are numerically evaluated by both link- and MAC (Media access control)-level simulations in terms of throughput, delay time, and ranging success probability.
