A Study on the Classification of European Copy Papers with Infrared Spectroscopy and Principal Component Analysis

Abstract

There are several approaches to evaluate characteristics of a paper and classify them. In recent studies, mathematical and statistical disciplines are widely applied on chemical data in different academic fields. One method which involves multivariate analysis was tested to confirm whether it is applicable for copy papers produced in Europe by a paper company. In this study, an infra-red (IR) spectroscopy and multivariate analysis were applied for specific paper products. The chemical properties of samples were obtained via attenuated total reflection-IR spectroscopy and then, processed with a principal component analysis to verify whether classification occurred. The results revealed that this method works to classify copy paper products made in Europe.
