Abstract

A novel cross bowtie antenna topology which efficiently senses circular polarized (CP) infrared (IR) waves is presented. The antenna structure utilizes a low bandgap semiconductor, Indium Gallium Arsenide Antimonide (InGaAsSb) as an antenna load which converts the concentrated field at the antenna terminal to DC current efficiently. The proposed antenna is composed of a horizontal bowtie, a vertical bowtie antenna, and the elliptical traces which connect two arms from the two bowties. The antenna matching structure which compensates for loading effect from the InGaAsSb is presented and the final antenna structure coupled with the InGaAsSb as a compact CP detector shows perfect CP at 180 THz where the highest quantum efficiency of the InGaAsSb exists.
