Abstract

The fundamental operation of vehicular ad hoc networks is that each vehicle periodically broadcasts a beacon that contains the vehicle's information, such as location, speed, identifier, etc. In this paper, we propose a cross-layer design for an adaptive beaconing scheme based on lane traffic density (LTD) to complement the weaknesses of conventional beaconing schemes. The performance of LTD beaconing is robust in not only general traffic scenarios but also in some special traffic scenarios, where conventional beaconing schemes are unable to overcome the issues of bandwidth utilization and fairness.
