Abstract

A preliminary study on conduct ions and discharges of 3 kinds of gap, such as a conventional point-to-plate gap, a conventional point-to-plate gap with field controlling electrode, and a hole-to-plate gap with field controlling electrode in pure water, has been investigated to check the potential to be used as an ozone generator. The I-V characteristics of 3 kinds of gap applied an ac and a dc of negative and positive polarity showed not much differences from those in airgap. But the arc discharges of the hole-to-plate gap in pure water showed a few differences such as the emitting bright red lights and the sounding wayward frequencies with water-pulsations from the hole cavity. It is found that the hole-to-plate gap with the field controlling electrode would have a potential to be as a ozone generator utilizing both ozone generating mechanisms of the electrolysis and corona discharges, while conventional one uses one of the generating mechanism, electrolysis or corona discharge.
