Abstract
The effect of various anions such as chloride, nitrate, sulfate, acetate and fluoride on the synthesis of AFI molecular sieves using microwave irradiation was investigated. The crystallization yield and crystal size increased with the decrease in pH of the reaction gel from 10 to 3 except the fluoride anion. By contrast, fluoride anion exhibited an opposite trend. Moreover, AFI molecular sieve in a rod shape having a very high aspect ratio of about 40 was obtained with the addition of fluoride. The decrease in the crystallization yield and the formation of long crystals is attributable to the effect of fluoride that dissolves the reaction gel by forming metal fluoride and thus retards the fast nucleation and crystal growth.
