Abstract
The sintering behavior of Li-doped yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) was investigated. Li doping in YSZ reduced the densification temperature and enhanced grain growth, as a result of the formation of a lithium-zirconate-related eutectic liquid during sintering. For 5 at% Li doping, the sample developed a duplex microstructure consisting of small grains with second phase particles in the inner region and large grains with pores in the surface region. The second phase of Li2ZrO3 near the surface of the sample decomposed into Li2O and ZrO2, followed by the evaporation of Li2O during sintering, leaving behind large pores in the microstructure.
