Abstract

The effects of aluminum cathodes, fabricated by ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD), in organic light-emitting devices were investigated. The highly stable organic electroluminescent devices based on spin-coated soluble phenyl-substituted poly-p-phenylene-vinylene (Ph-PPV) thin films were used for the analysis. It was found that a dense Al cathode inhibited the permeation of water and oxygen into Ph-PPV film by suppressing pinhole defects. It was also found that IBAD process generates damage to polymer due to ion beam bombardment, which results in lower quantum efficiency at low voltage.
