Abstract
The epiphytic diatom communities in two small acidic mountain bogs in Korea were studied from May 1998 to March 1999. A total of 96 diatom species belonging to 21 genera were found. The diatom communities were characterized by an abundance of species from the genus Eunotia, including E. bilunaris, E. flexuosa, E. implicata and E. naegelii, but also commonly contained Tabellaria flocculosa, Peronia fibula and Achnanthes bioretii. The dominant species varied according to sampling period and locality. Species diversity and richness were particularly high in May and lowest in November. Acidobiontic and acidophilous species were the most common in terms of numbers and species diversity. Among them, E. circumborealis, E. denticulata, E. implicata and E. naegelii were recorded for the first time in Korea.
