Abstract

We have measured the magnetization curves M(T, H) of ErNi 2B 2C and DyNi 2B 2C single crystals with magnetic fields perpendicular and parallel to the c axis at low temperatures. Only for a magnetic field perpendicular to the c axis, do the ErNi 2B 2C and DyNi 2B 2C compounds show magnetic phase transitions similar to those of TbNi 2B 2C and HoNi 2B 2C compounds. However unlike in TbNi 2B 2C, the ferromagnetism only coexists in ErNi 2B 2C at temperatures and fields well below T c and H c2. Magnetic phase diagrams in the H-T plane were constructed from the M(T, H) data for the H ⊥ c axis.
