Abstract
π-Conjugated polyfluorenes were prepared by the Yamamoto coupling reaction. AFM observation revealed that single molecules of polyfluorenes bearing isopentyl, n-hexyl, or n-heptyl side groups at the 9-positions can adopt giant ring structure with 100-150 nm in diameter on mica. Other derivatives with n-alkyl side chains, however, gave dot-like structures. Polyfluorene derivatives with fluorine termini, also, showed the similar dot-like forms.Only giant ring polyfluorenes on quartz showed green photoluminescence peaking at 550 nm, while chain-like olyfluorenes showed no such emission.
