Abstract
Heterologous expression of fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe heavy metal tolerance factor 1 (SpHMT1) confers increased tolerance to Cd but sensitivity to Cu in budding yeast. Due to its sensitivity to Cu, SpHMT1 cannot be used in bioremediation of Cd in Cu-contaminated sites. Thus, in the present study we attempted to solve this problem by expressing SpHMT1 in Cu-resistant yeast mutants.
