Abstract

The effects of a capping layer (Cu, Al) and post-annealing on the magnetic properties of Fe films grown on MgO(001) were investigated. As-grown films showed similar coercivities. However, the saturation magnetization was the largest for the uncapped Fe film, suggesting that the interface plays an important role in the saturation magnetization. After vacuum annealing at 500 °C for 30 min, the coercivities of all films were increased. Moreover, the films with a capping layer showed increased saturation magnetization. However, the saturation magnetization of the uncapped Fe films was lower after annealing. The variations in the capping-material-dependent magnetic properties might be related to different effects that occur at the interface between the Fe and the capping layer.
