Abstract

Educational trends in the 21st century are different from the past in highlighting creativity, student-directed learning, and the ability to use knowledge. In this paper, the researchers examine the meaning and traits of narrative in education and the ways to apply narrative to subject matter education. Narrative refers to the events accumulated in one's life through meaning-making, and it depends on inter-subjectivity and interpretation. Considering the trends of the 21st century, making new meaning and connecting knowledge to real situation are tasks we have to solve. With narrative, we can resolve these new tasks. In particular, as the 2015 revised national curriculum is congruent with narrative, applying narrative curriculum planning in subject matters would be relevant to the attainment and use of knowledge in a modern era. In this way, subject matter education can develop further and students' understanding will deepen through narrative. By appreciating and using narrative, our education can be meaningful and relevant for all students.
