Abstract

A new approach is proposed in this paper to integrate NURBS interpolation with toolworkpiece dynamics. The important source of machine tool vibration namely, the regenerative chatter, is analyzed with respect to adaptive and jerk limited feedrate interpolators. The feed motion for the NURBS trajectory is characterized by a path of continuously varying curvature resulting in instantaneous variation of cutting geometries. In addition, due to adaptive interpolation of the tool path, machine stages must be commanded at every sampling interval to reach the desired position with a varying feedrate. Using the proposed approach, integrated machining dynamics of a sample NURBS curve is illustrated. The feedrate profiles of different adaptive and jerk limited interpolators are first computed and the instantaneous cutting process geometries are estimated. Numerical time domain simulations for integrated interpolation-cutting dynamics are carried out and analyzed.
