Abstract

This study was aimed at investigating how Korean middle school students understand Pi in real-world problem-solving situations. First, the study analyzed the national curriculum and textbooks of mathematics of Korea in relation to Pi and compared them with overseas cases. The analysis of the Korean curriculum focused on the curriculum revised in 2009, which had been applied to the students who participated in this study. Based on the above discussion, this study developed an evaluation tool to more profoundly investigate Korean students’ understanding of Pi in real-world problem-solving situations, and applied it to the examination and analysis on the understanding of Pi among the middle school students participating in this study.
