Abstract

The well-documented potential psychological benefits of exercise are generally accepted, although it is not clear as to the potential differential effects of various forms of exercise. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of aerobic and anaerobic exercises on positive mood alteration. Korean undergraduate students (N=389) participated in this study and were assigned to one of five activities: (1) aerobic exercise, (2) body conditioning, (3) hip-hop dance, (4) ice skating and (5) jazz dance. The Korean translated Subjective Exercise Experiences Scale (SEES) was used to measure affect (positive well-being, psychological distress and fatigue). Factor analysis and a 5 (groups) x 2 (tests) ANOVA with repeated measures on the SEES scores were conducted to examine affect alteration. The findings revealed that psychological well-being increased significantly in the aerobics, hip-hop dance and jazz dance conditions. The results of this investigation support previous research which has demonstrated that vigorous physical activity programs serve to increase positive well-being and decrease negative affect.
