title = "Novel poly(Vinyl alcohol)/silver nanocomposite microspheres for embolic materials",
abstract = "Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a nontoxic, watersoluble, biocompatible, and biodegradable synthetic polymer. PVA is frequently used for superselective embolization of vascular lesions. In this study, new PVA embolic materials with functionalities such as radioopacity and antibacterial effect were prepared via a low temperature suspension polymerization of vinyl acetate in the presence of silver nanoparticles and heterogeneous saponification. It was found that a high yield and high molecular weight poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc)/silver could be concurrently obtained even using a lowtemperature initiator. The suspension polymerization approach introduced could produce PVAc/silver nanocomposite with conversion and number-average degree of polymerization up to 95 % and 15,000 respectively, in spite of at low polymerization temperature, in sharp contrast with only ~30% conversion of VAc under bulk polymerization. Morphology studies revealed that except normal suspension microspheres with a smooth surface, a golf-ball-like appearance among the microspheres was observed, due to the migration and aggregating of the hydrophilic silver nanoparticles at the sublayer beneath the microsphere{\textquoteright}s surface. In the preservation test, the PVA/silver nanocomposite microspheres showed a powerful antibacterial effect.",
