Abstract

Numerical Investigation is performed for flow past a square cylinder with different corner radius placed at an angle to the incoming flow. The focus of study is on the variation of wake structures and aerodynamic forces according to change in cylinder corner radius and orientation. In the present study, corner curvature ratio R/D=0 (square cylinder), 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 (circular cylinder), (where R is the corner radius and D is the characteristic dimension of the body) and angle of incidence in the range α=0°-45° are considered at Reynolds number 500. The numerical model is validated by comparing the present results and found in good agreement with the available literatures. The corner radius and angle of incidence is found to significantly influence the flow characteristics around the cylinder which includes drag and lift coefficients, instantaneous velocity and vorticity and Strouhal number. The minimum mean drag coefficient (CD) for incidence angle α=0° is observed at R/D =0.2, while for other Incidence angle α=15°, 30°, 45° the drag reduces with the increase of R/D ratio. The variation of wake width with R/D and angle of Incidence shows a trend similar to that of CD.
