Abstract
The integrated infrared intensities of the C-H stretching fundamental modes in benzene were determined by the dispersion and transmission methods. The values determined by the two methods were comparable, suggesting that the difficulty with earlier discrepancies has been resolved. The complex refractive index of benzene in the C-H stretching region was also determined. The values obtained from the analysis of dispersion measurements in the liquid state were in fair agreement with those from the transmission spectrum in the solution state. It is proposed that the refractive index of a liquid sample in the very strongly absorbing region can be more confidently obtained by analysing the dispersion data in conjunction with the information on the spectral profiles determined from the transmission spectrum.
