Preparation and characterization of cellulose nanofibril based hydrogels for drug release systems

Abstract

Hydrogels (microgels and nanogels) based on CMF or CNF were successfully prepared by adding cationic ions. Rheological and compression tests suggest that hydrogels induced by the Al3+ cation forms stronger interaction than those of Ca2+ and H+. As the cation valence decreases from Al3+, Ca2+, to H+, the surface area of both microgel and nanogel decreases while fibril diameter of two hydrogels increases. The drug release of hydrogels is closely related to their internal structure.
