Abstract

Titanium scrap was re-melted and refined by using a DC-ESR (Direct Current Electro Slag Re-melting) apparatus. A graphite rod was used as anode. The used slag was CaF2-TiO2-CaO mixture. The effect of slag composition on the shape and oxygen content of re-melted ingot was studied. The titanium ingot was formed very well from the CaF2-TiO2 slag system and the oxygen content of ingot was less than that of Ti scrap. The addition of CaO to CaF2-TiO2 system showed the bad appearance of ingot. The oxygen content of Ti ingot was higher than that of Ti scrap in the CaF2-TiO2-CaO slag system. It is concluded that the re-melting and refine of titanium scraps is possible in the present process.
