Abstract

We have investigated the magnetic and transport properties of the Gd-doped layered manganite (La0.8Gd0.2)1.4 Sr1.6Mn2O7. The Gd-doped compound shows the nonmetallic spin-glass-like state below 30 K, driven by competing interaction between the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic states. Furthermore, this compound exhibits various relaxorlike phenomena such as the diffuse phase transition and magnetic-field annealing and aging effects, which appears to be caused by the local lattice distortion originating from the random distribution of small Gd3+ ion.
