The impact of information literacy education on innovativeness and transformation of elderly Koreans: An empirical study

Abstract

Information literacy education is increasingly becoming essential as information technology turns out to be an integral part of daily life. Even the lives of elderly people are not exempted by the changes brought about by technological innovations in the society. In fact, in the information society, the participation of elderly people through the on-line is important for the regional development and innovation. With this trend, this study concentrated on the information literacy education and investigated the impact of information literacy education in developing innovative thinking and changing perceptions of elderly Korean group. This study utilized both face to face interview and online survey to gather responses from Koreans who are over 50 years of age living in different residential areas of South Korea. The total 640 usual questionnaires are collected and analyzed. The result indicated that elderly people who participated in the information literacy education reflected more innovative attitude and manifested a positive change in their outlook in life. In addition, innovativeness differences by gender, age, and residential area were analyzed. The implications of these findings and recommendations were also discussed.
