Abstract

As the demographic landscape of the world changes, people are curious about those who live well beyond their life expectancy; those people referred to as the oldest old. Their chronological age has been a fascination to researchers and practitioners. This chapter reports findings in the main areas of function and well-being, sociodemographic factors, mental health, social support, and health. Where possible, findings regarding the very old (85+) are compared and contrasted with those on the young old (65-75 years of age) and the old (75-85 years of age). Racial and ethnic variations are addressed, as well as caregiving and service delivery issues, and culturally competent care for the very old.
