Abstract

We report a synthesis of water-soluble poly(p-phenylene ethynylene)(PPE) copolymers containing 2, 1,3-benzothiadiazole for cell imaging. The polymers showed emission ranges from blue to red fluorescence according to their benzothiadiazole contents in the backbones. One of the nonionic groups, oligo(ethylene glycol) unit was incorporated in the side chain of the polymers to enhance water-solubility of the polymers. Carboxylic acid groups were introduced at the end of the oligo(ethylene glycol) unit for the specific interaction with cells. As a result, specific cell imaging was successfully accomplished using the red-emitting, water-soluble conjugated polymers containing benzothiadiazole.
